Welcome to Nandi Hills , Nandi Hills, Nandi Hills travel guide , Nandi Hills Address

Nandi Hills got its name from the ancient Dravidian temple dedicated to the Nandi Bull statue that’s located here, and Nandi is believed to be the mount of Lord Shiva. There are actually two Nandi Temples here, one is in the village at the foot hills and the other is at the top of the hill.

Nandi Hills was earlier known as Ananda Giri during the reign of the Cholas, which stands for the ‘Hill of Happiness’. As per folklore, the name might have originated with the visit of Yoga Nandeeshwara who also conducted penance here. As per another belief, the resemblance of the hills to the sleeping Nandi Bull gave the name to this place.

The Nandi Temple in the village at the bottom of the hills was built by the Banas who ruled this region in the Ninth Century. This temple is an amalgam of different styles of temple building, because it was renovated by various dynasties that ruled this place.

There is an ancient temple of Yoga Nandeeswara  atop the hill. A fort was built during the period by the chieftains  of Chikkaballapur.  It was strengthened by Tipu Sultan. This fort was considered impregnable, it covers a vast area of 90 acres and soldiers could shoot from all directions without being seen and there is the famous “Tipu Drop”  a 600 metre cliff with a huge rock landing after the drop. Prisoners and convicts during Tipu’s reign were pushed off this cliff.

This region was ruled by the Banas, the Cholas, the Hoysalas, the Vijayanagara Kings, Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan and then taken over by the British.

Nandi Hills was also the favorite summer retreat of Tipu Sultan, who once ruled over the Mysore Province. He also built a fort here, which is known by the name Nandidurga Fort. After the fall of Tipu Sultan, this Fort was occupied and patronized by the British as well. It is believed that this fort might also have rendered its name to hills.

Tourist Activities at Nandi Hills

Nandi Hills offers plenty of opportunities in trekking to its visitors. There are many trekking trails at Nandi Hills that go around the Fort, which also provide great views of the scenic surroundings.

Nandi Hills also offers opportunities in tandem paragliding for those who are interested in flying like a bird. Tandem Paragliding flights are perfect even for beginners, wherein they will be strapped to a harness along with a trained pilot. The weight of the people who intend to fly should be in the range of 45 kg to 85 kg, and they should also be healthy and fit.

Nandi Hills offer four different take offs that are situated towards the North, North-west, South-east, and South. The take off from the North-West of the Nandi Hills require a 40-minute hike from Curve 20. Since there are plenty of many flat lands around, Nandi Hills are often frequented by the professional pilots as well as the paragliding enthusiasts from all across India.

A Haven for Nature Lovers

Nandi Hills is famous for its rolling green slopes that surround the Amrit Sarovar Lake. Nandi Hills is considered sacred as it is the source of rivers such as Palar, Arkavati, and Pennar, which joins with River Cauvery on their further course. The moist evergreen forests of the Nandi Hills provide the natural habitat for diverse species of wildlife, including the Shaheen Falcon, Malabar Whistling Thrush, Uropeltid snakes, Pill millipedes, and the endemic Yellow-throated Bulbuls.

Nandi Hills offers historic and scenic attractions such as Tipu’s Drop, Tipu’s Summer Palace and Fort, Horse Way, Secret Escape Route, Amruth Sarovar Lake, and Brahmashram. It is also famous for its temples such as the Bhoga Nandeeshwara temple, Sri Bhoga Narasimha temple, Sri Ugra Narasimha temple, Sri Yoga Narasimha temple, and Gavi Veerbhadra Swamy temple.

Accommodation

Nandi Hills provides modern, well-furnished accommodation for tourists. Nehru House and Gandhi House are the Government guest houses. The Horticulture Department runs a vegetarian restaurant and the Karnataka Tourism Department runs a vegetarian / non-vegetarian restaurant “MAYURA”. There are many restaurants and dhabas enroute for short eats.

Nandi Hills Address :  Nandi Hill Station, Chikkaballapur Taluk, Kolar district. Distance between Bangalore to Nandi Hills is 61 km. Travel Time by road is 1 hrs

The best time to visit Goa, Best Time to Visit Goa

The best time to travel to Goa is between November and March, when the weather is dry and relatively cool, the sea is calm and clear, and all the facilities, from resorts and restaurants to beach shacks and parties, are open for business.
Goa Season

December and January are the most perfect - and popular - months to visit Goa, almost 100% rain-free with lovely cool mornings and evenings and hot beach weather during the day. This is the lucky Goan's winter!

Although the Goa ‘scene’ has slowed, some big music festivals are now regular fixtures at this time of year, as well as the best outdoor parties and big name DJs headlining at club nights. The weekly flea and night markets in north Goa are also at their busiest, with plenty of bargains to be had once you’ve mastered the Indian art of haggling, plus live bands and entertainment.

Goans, whether Christian, Hindu or Muslim, embrace Christmas, festooning everything with tinsel, whilst local school children try out their carol singing for tourists on the beach. Having a slap up seafood lunch under the tropical sun is certainly one way to get into the Christmas spirit, and New Year is no different in Goa to anywhere in the world, except that you can party with the warm sand between your toes under a sky full of fireworks.
Goa beach resorts

However, in terms of crowds, it is the busiest time, so the best Goa beach resorts get booked up early (by October many of them are full for the Christmas/New Year period) and some of the beaches, particularly in the north, get very overpopulated. However, in the south of Goa there are still plenty of more peaceful, crowd-free Goa resort options at that time of year.
Goa Off Season

February and March are great months to be in Goa, as the beaches slowly empty of tourists and room rates become more reasonable. From April until the monsoon rains break in June, the weather gets increasingly hot and humid (you may want to ensure that your room has air-conditioning at this time of year) and some beach places start to close. However, many resorts offer great rates at this time of year and you will sometimes have the remoter beaches practically to yourself!

October can also be a great time to visit to see Goa, vivid green after the monsoon and mostly free from other tourists, although there is still some occasional rain.
Goa Monsoon

And then there is Goa monsoon. Almost like clockwork, within the first ten days of June, the rains arrive. By this time all the temporary beach hut resorts have closed up and been removed and the only options for accommodation and eating are guest-houses and cottages of a more permanent nature, self-catering houses and apartments, and the large hotels dotted up and down the coast.

However, the rainy months of June to September have lots to offer providing you don’t mind monsoon storms or expect a beach holiday. The vegetation is green and lush, the rice paddies are planted and the seas wild and stormy. With activities more restricted to eating at local restaurants, enjoying vibrant festivals including Ganesha, and watching nature run riot, you can experience Goa like a Goan. Just remember to pack your raincoat!

Goa Events and Festivals

The state of Goa enjoys its many festivals, featuring a series of public holidays, religious Hindu celebrations and even Christian events, such as Easter and Christmas. When visiting Goa, try to time your holiday with one of its biggest festivals, when you will find plenty of things to do, see and enjoy.

Goa's Feast of St. Francis Xavier is especially popular and takes place each year at the beginning of December, while for something a little different, the Beach Bonanza is a true highlight and based around the region's many coastal resorts. The main festivals in Goa are described here, month by month

Goa Carnival Dates 2015

When: 14th February, 2015
Where: Goa

In the days when Goa was ruled lock, stock and barrel by the Portuguese, the tradition of an annual festival- held four days before the start of Lent- began. It started as a bit of a farce, where the white colonial rulers pretended to be 'black' slaves, and the slaves, mostly from Mozambique, plastered their faces with flour and took on the role of the masters. The local Konkanis watched in amusement- as they still do, to some extent, whenever a feni-befuddled tourist tries joining in the fun.

Goa Carnival Celebrations

Goa Carnival is the most awaited event in Goa, preparations for which start from December itself. Other than music, dance and other entertainment, the carnival in Goa also features short plays depicting the tradition and culture of Goa in a unique way.

Pre-Lent carnivals are a time for fun and Goa's carnival is revelry all the way. It's the last big bash before the season of Lent starts, and this is when Goa parties for five days, non-stop.

The festival will kick start on the 8th of February with a Food and Cultural festival with cooking competition being the main feature of the day. The opening ceremony with be held on the 9th of February.

The Goa Carnival, true to form, is a time for unrestrained merrymaking with fashion, dancing, processions, music performed by both local and national level artists and unlimited food, with more than 70 stalls providing food and beverages, being part and parcel of the festivities.

Momo, the legendary King of Chaos leads his entourage of fire- eaters, acrobats, clowns, jesters, dancers, brass bands and revellers in parade down the main street of Panaji, Goa. King Momo commands his people to 'kha, piye and majja kar' - eat, drink and make merry and so be it!
